Launched in 2008 the Intercultural Cities Programme (ICC) is a joint initiative of the European Council and the European Commission that aims to successfully design, test and validate a methodology and set of tools to assist local authorities in developing intercultural policies and strategies.

In August 2019 the ICC released the revised edition of the document “Intercultural City Step by Step“, which is a practical guide for city leaders that aims to help develop strategies to confront the increasing challenges of intercultural integration and community cohesion in the urban space.

This initiative, which has been joined by over 130 cities, suggests adopting an intercultural approach to foster integration and social inclusion, and enhancing diversity as a resource of creativity, well-being and economic development.
