Programme in Support of Cultural and Creative Enterprises – new website
This programme is carried out in Medellín (Colombia) and coordinated by the Interarts Foundation and the University of Antioquia, with support from the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AECID). A management model which conceives cultural production as a tool for development, its ultimate aim is to set up a sustainable system connecting the field of arts and culture with the economic, social and academic sectors. This is an integral strategy for the gradual integration of topics, products, goods and services between the University and the productive sectors in the Antioquia region and Colombia, with an extension at global scale. The programme has recently launched its website, which includes thorough explanations on its background, development, current state and forms of involvement. It also provides details about existing business projects, those which are currently being implemented or developing their business plan and, lastly, those which find themselves in the early stages and aim to develop their business project. Constitutive Workshop of the Capacity-Building Programme ''Cultural Diversity 2030''
The constitutive workshop of the interdisciplinary capacity-building programme ''Cultural Diversity 2030'' was held in Barcelona on 19-20 September. The programme enables young experts under 40 years of age to take part in the debates surrounding the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. It is an initiative of the German Commission for UNESCO, which cooperated with the Government of Catalonia for the organisation of the Barcelona workshop. The approximately 20 young experts from 15 European countries who took part will continue their cooperation through face-to-face and online exchanges until 2010. Participation in the European Intercultural Campus
In the framework of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, the City of Warsaw and the Pro Cultura Foundation convened the European Intercultural Campus in Warsaw on 12-13 September. The event addressed contemporary intercultural dynamics in European cities and relevant cultural policies in this context. In addition, a working meeting to discuss the preparation of Warsaw's 2020 Cultural Strategy was organised, involving the international guests attending the Campus. Interarts took part in the event. UNCTAD launches Global Databank on World Trade in Creative Products
On 15 August, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) presented a new database providing trade statistics on creative goods and services. The statistics cover about 235 products related to heritage, arts, media and functional creations. The database's statistics are based on information reported to the United Nations by national sources. Currently the site shows global trade flows for 1996-2006. Kosice and Marseilles will be the European Capitals of Culture in 2013
The jury responsible for assessing the applications for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2013 recommended in September that the title be given to the cities of Kosice (Slovakia) and Marseilles (France). Both were competing against other cities in their respective countries, as Slovakia and France are due to share the title in 2013. European Commission – public consultation on the future of youth policy
The European Commission has recently launched a public consultation on how the European Union's youth policy should develop in the future. The consultation seeks to answer questions about the main challenges or opportunities which will have the most direct impact on young people. The consultation is addressed both to individuals and organisations which are interested in the future of young people in the EU and in other countries participating in the EU's youth programmes. 9th International Conference on Diversity in Organisations, Communities and Nations – call for papers
The ninth International Conference on Diversity in Organisations, Communities and Nations will be held in RIga, Latvia, on 15-18 June 2009. A call for papers has been launched for either in-person or virtual presentations at the conference. Relevant themes include 'Dimensions of Diversity', 'Governing Diversity – Community in a Globalising World', 'Representing Diversity – The Influences of Global Tourism and the Global Media', 'Learning Diversity – Education in a World of Difference' and 'Working Diversity – Managing the Culture of Diversity'. Casa Asia: mobility grants Asia-Spain
Casa Asia has announced the annual call of its Antoni de Montserrat mobility programme. 12 grants will be given to relevant professionals from Asia and the Pacific region to take part in meetings, courses, seminars, trade fairs and arts festivals organised by public or private bodies in Spain. Music in Health Settings – call for scholarship applications
The next European training session “Music in Health Settings”, set up by Musique & Santé in partnership with the Royal Northern College of Music, will take place in Paris from 2 to 6 February 2009. With support from the European Commission's Lifelong Learning Programme, the organisers of the event are inviting musicians who are also trainers or professors involved in adult education to apply for individual scholarships by 31 October. The International Forum on the Creative Economy – Compendium of Research Papers
The Conference Board of Canada has recently released the Compendium of Research Papers resulting from the International Forum on the Creative Economy, a two-day forum held in Gatineau, Québec in March 2008. The Association for European and International Cultural Development (ADCEI) has recently uploaded a list of resources contributing to cultural mobility in Europe and the Mediterranean. Transversal: Borders, nations, translations
The Transversal web journal presents a series of texts from the conference ''Borders, Nations, Translations. The Political Limits of Cultural Trans-Nationalism'', which took place in March 2008 in Vienna in conjunction with translate. The event addressed questions such as 'If … home today is our globalised world, then its mother tongue cannot be but a translation, both linguistically and culturally… Should we form a nation of translation and claim its sovereignty in an independent state?'. AECID: new books in the 'Culture and Development' series
The Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AECID) has released two new volumes in its 'Culture and Development' series. On the one hand, La Cooperación Cultura-Comunicación en Iberoamérica collects the proceedings of a seminar held in Madrid in 2007, addressing the relationship between culture and media in Iberoamerica. An initiative of Fundación Alternativas and the Organisation of Iberoamerican States (OEI), the book has been edited by Enrique Bustamante. On the other hand, Héctor Ariel Olmos has authored Gestión cultural e identidad: claves para el desarrollo, which combines theoretical and practical approaches to cultural management as a resource for human development, with particular emphasis on the notion of cultural identity. Iberoamerican Observatory of Authors' Rights launches newsletter
Last August, the Bogotá-based Iberoamerican Observatory of Authors' Rights (ODAI) launched ODAI Reporta, a new monthly electronic newsletter. The bulletin collects information on legal and financial developments, interviews and other related news in the fields of authors' rights and copyright. ODAI was established earlier this year on the initiative of the Regional Centre for the Promotion of Books in Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLALC) and Spain's Fundación Autor. Cultural Diversity and Local Development (Damascus, Syria, 5-7 October)
The Chambre des Beaux Arts de Méditerranée and its partners are organising this workshop and conference entitled 'Cultural Diversity and Local Development', which will focus on the contribution of traditional crafts to local development and cultural diversity, as well as the protection of producers and their works. Public Libraries: Open Spaces for Learning (Badalona, Catalonia, 17-18 October)
The UNESCO Centre of Catalonia (UNESCOcat) and the Catalan Group of UNESCO Associated Libraries are organising their third interprofessional conference. The 16th Annual Conference of the European Network of Cultural Administration Training Centres (ENCATC), entitled 'Intercultural dialogue and project management: New training programmes in a context of major challenges', will take place on 16-18 October in Lyon, France. 3rd Euroregional Cultural Conference (Mallorca, 23-25 October)
The 3rd Cultural Conference of the Euroregion Pyrenees-Mediterranean will be held in Palma de Mallorca (Balearic Islands). The event, entitled 'Innovation, research and culture', will particularly focus on the challenges brought about by the evolution from a Society of Information to a Society of Knowledge and its implications for cultural managers. Signs of the City – Metropolis Speaking (Berlin, London, Barcelona and Sofia, October-November 2008)
Employing digital photography and new media, the Culture 2007 funded youth art project Signs of the City – Metropolis Speaking has been exploring the sign systems of Barcelona, Berlin, London and Sofia for the past year. Nearly 300 young people, accompanied by 28 professional artists in a series of workshops, have documented their urban environment and created an online visual inventory (www.citpix.net). To mark the end of this European project, free cross-disciplinary conferences offer perspectives on participatory arts in education in the House of World Cultures Berlin (17-18 October), the Goethe Institute London (4 October), and the Goethe Institute Bulgaria (24 October). Furthermore, exhibitions take place in Berlin in the House of World Cultures (26 September – 2 November), in London’s Watermans Gallery (4 October – 2 November), in Barcelona’s Centre Civic Can Basté (9 October – 9 November), and in the House of Cinema in Sofia (15 October – 15 November). 3rd Conference 'A Soul for Europe' (Berlin, 14-15 November)
The third Berlin Conference marks the end of the first phase of work of 'A Soul for Europe'. From 2009 onwards the initiative, which since 2003 has given the European project a cultural dimension, will be launching new projects with strong European partners and an organisation involving more young people. One of the main topics for discussion will be the cultural dimension and European basis of companies operating on a global scale. Speakers and guests include the presidents of the European Commission, the European Parliament and the German Bundestag, José Manuel Barroso, Hans-Gert Pöttering and Norbert Lammert respectively, as well as representatives of several major business companies. Cyberkaris is the monthly electronic newsletter of the Interarts Foundation for all those interested in news and happenings in the field of international cultural policies and cultural cooperation. The Interarts Foundation, International Observatory of Urban and Regional Cultural Policies, promotes since 1995 research in culture and territorial development, cooperation between networks and artistic, cultural and heritage projects, the definition and fostering of Cultural Rights and offers advice to projects and entrepreneurs from the cultural sector and the creative industries. Interarts is an agency working in ''partnership'' with organisations in Catalonia and Spain as well as with the main world agents for international cultural cooperation, among which are those belonging to the system of the United Nations, the European Union, the Council of Europe and intergovernmental agencies between Europe and Latin America, Asia and Africa. Interarts is presently managing programmes related to the ecological, axiological and deonthological aspects of cultural development as well as others that foster the new role of civil society in the cultural sector.
