With the support of the European Commission and in the framework of the program “Europe for Citizens” the Association for European and International Cultural Development is leading the project in collaboration with 8 European partners from Belgium, Germany, Greece, Malta, Portugal, Spain and United Kingdom. Among the participants, all members of the Euromedinculture, Interarts numbers as well. The project is structured on the consultation of the public opinion, having as a starting point the European Agenda for Culture, and on a series of debate forums in order to facilitate the exchange of opinions and ideas on culture, on its diverse form of manifestation and the role it should play in Europe’s future. Thus, the project consists of an interregional meeting in each of the participating countries (between April and May) and a final European forum (in July).
The last phase of the project consists in collecting all the contributions which these citizen participative processes have highlighted in one document to be submitted to European institutions and disseminated to policy-makers in general. Interarts, together with the French association leader of the project, will be responsible to draft this document, which will be delivered in late 2009 to the European Commission. Some of these recommendations show the advisability the European Union to take into account the culture in all its activities in order to foster intercultural respect and to promote diversity and to integrate a new school subject on European culture into primary education in all EU. In January 2010 a new phase of the project Euromedinculture Citizenship 2010 begins, involving a dozen of partners from different EU Member States and other European countries. Throughout this phase Interarts carries out some public consultation activities addressed to cultural professionals and local and regional administrations on the cultural dimension in the European construction process. Likewise, the project’s online questionnaire, available in several languages, also in Spanish and in Catalan, is spread.
